Founder Principal, North Bengal Medical College
Professor Dr. Tashmina Mahmood (later well known as Tashmina Matin) was born in Sirajganj in 1939. Her father was a renowned politician Late Abdullah Al Mahmood. She had her Matriculation in 1953 from Saleha Ishaque Girls' High School, Sirajganj and Higher Secondary in 1956 from Rajshahi Govt. College, Rajshahi. She completed her medical graduation (MBBS) in 1963 from Dhaka Medical College under University of Dhaka. Then she was married to Dr. M. A. Matin and they went to UK for higher education. She completed her DRCOG in 1966 from Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in London.
Professor Dr. Tashmina had good worked experience in the UK during her stay there with her husband. She was employed as House Officer in Sheppey General Hospital, England and as House Surgeon in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Bromley General Hospital and Ossett Hospital, England.
After returning to Bangladesh, Professor Tashmina joined the Government Health Service and worked as Registrar, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, Dhaka, as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. Then she resigned the govt, service and joined Holy Family Hospital, Dhaka as Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, followed by Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Dhaka National Hospital, Dhaka. She upgraded this hospital with her own efforts to Medical College, and become the first Principal of Dhaka National Medical College and Director of the Hospital.
Professor Tashmina with her extensive academic and administrative experiences, then joined their own institution (North Bengal Medical College) as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Principal with which she served till her last breath. After the unexpected and untimely demise of her husband Professor M.A. Matin, she was also serving as Chairperson of the Board of Management of University of South Asia, Dhaka, as Chairperson of the Board of Trustee of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, Sirajganj, as President of Sirajganj Diabetic Samity, Sirajganj, as President of Professor MA Matin BNSB Eye Hospital, Sirajganj and as President of the NGO (Dip Shetu), Sirajganj.
Professor Tashmina was also involved in many social activities. She established the "Mother and Childcare Centre" and the "Maternity Hospital" in Sirajganj and Shahjadpur upazilas. She established the Tashmina Matin Girls' High School, Alampur, Sirajganj and Tashmina Handicrafts Centre, Sirajganj.
Professor Tashmina attended the WHO course on "Service Research in Family Planning" in Geneva, Switzerland. "Role of village Practitioners in Family Planning Service Delivery System in Bangladesh" is a booklet jointly authored by Professor Dr. Tashmina Mahmood and Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and was published by NIPORT in collaboration with WHO in 1985. Other publications include: "Case Report- Hydatid Cyst in Uterus and Ovary", "Congenital Anomalies of the Foetus", "Post-maturity of Pregnancy". She published a good reference book for the undergraduate students "Obstetrics and Gynaecology-Questions and Answers". She was awarded lifelong achievement from Gynaecological Post-menopausal Society for best performances.
Professor Tashmina and Professor M.A. Matin are blessed with two brilliant sons. Elder one Professor M.A. Muqueet, eminent Cardiologist currently working as Chairman, Department of Cardiology at Bangladesh Medical University and as Chairperson of the Board of Trustee of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. Her other son Dr. M.A. Muhit, PhD working as Chairman, Board of Trustee, University of South Asea, Dhaka and is famous for working with the handicapped children and eradication of child blindness under Child Sight Foundation.
