North Bengal Medical College (NBMC) was established in the year 2000, the first private medical college in the northern districts of Bangladesh. The college is one of the envisioned institutions by the legends, the founder chairman, Late Professor Dr. M.A. Matin and his spouse, the founder principal, Professor Dr. Tashmina Mahmood. The vision behind establishing this medical college at Sirajganj is to provide ample opportunity of the unprivileged society to get modern healthcare services at their doorsteps. The statutory objective of the college is to provide a congenial environment for the brilliant student coming from national selection criteria to get updated education and training to become doctors dedicated to serve suffering humanity at home and abroad.
The College is situated in the heart of this district town, Sirajganj, in a beautiful location on the bank of the mighty river Jamuna. The campus has a special scenic beauty with green trees, orchard & floral gardens interspersed with new buildings and old heritage buildings. The library, museums and lecture galleries are air conditioned, Wi-Fi connected and well-equipped for array of presentations. There are arrangements for healthy water supply and uninterrupted power supply for the college, hospital, hostels and teachers’ dormitories.
The college is well-communicated by roads, railway and waterways. Jamuna Bridge and Jamuna Railway Bridge are somewhat 14 KM from the college. There are good number of healthy restaurants, Shopping Complexes, public auditoria and community centres in this town. Among the high facility guest houses within accessible distances are Circuit house, BTCL guest house, North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) guest house, NDP guest house and Jamuna Resort. For games and sports, there are separate common rooms for ladies and gents and a badminton ground in the college. For outdoor games, there is ground in the compound of foreign gent students’ hostel. The district multi-sports stadium named Shaheed Shamsuddin stadium, used for annual cricket and football competition is within walking distance of the college.
There are good number of sites for tourism and entertainments. Notable are Jamuna river bank especially Hard point, China cross dam, Eco Park, Jamuna Bridge, Jamuna Railway Bridge, Al-Aman Bahela Khatun mosque, Belkuchi, Masjid-E-Nowajish, Kaliaharipur, Noborotno Mondir, Hatikumrul.
The college has its affiliated 500-bedded general hospital for multi-disciplinary healthcare in the same campus and optimized for adequate clinical exposure for students and trainee doctors.
The records of pass rate in the professional examinations in this college are quite admirable. Appreciable number of the past students have completed post-graduation degrees from institutions in the country and abroad, and some of them are already in the teaching faculty of this college.
The chairman, governing body, principal and the faculty of North Bengal Medical College have always been engaged with initiatives and endeavours for further development of education and healthcare services of the college.
